Why the 2011 World Cup Mattered

This tournament was a turning point. For the first time, roller derby was presented as an organized international sport. Teams are trained nationally. Broadcasts reached fans in countries where the derby was just beginning. And the visibility it brought to leagues outside North America fueled new growth globally.

Several skaters who competed went on to become coaches and leaders in the development of derby programs in developing countries. For many players, this was the highest stage they had ever competed on.
